I think I could spend hours walking around El Retiro Park with a camera in my hands. There's just so much to see, and every few steps you find another little corner that makes you want to stop and take a picture.

A few days ago, I had my very first photo session in Madrid, and I got to explore the park with a lovely couple visiting from Boston. We were there to capture their maternity photos, but it felt just as much like a little afternoon stroll with new friends.

They were so kind, so happy, and so easy to be around. From the moment we met, it felt less like meeting clients for the first time and more like spending an afternoon with new friends. And that’s one of my favorite things about this job: the photographs are important, of course, but the people I get to meet along the way make the experience even more meaningful.

A little afternoon adventure in El Retiro

We spent the afternoon wandering through El Retiro Park, and if you’ve ever been there, you probably understand what I mean when I say there’s a beautiful little surprise around every corner.

Everywhere you look, there’s another backdrop to fall in love with. Beautiful paths, old trees, hidden corners, golden leaves, little clearings, and the kind of light that makes you want to stop every few steps and take another photograph.

Madrid is already full of beautiful places, but visiting El Retiro in the fall feels like stepping into a movie. The leaves are slowly changing colors, and suddenly there are shades of green, yellow, and orange everywhere. The whole park feels warmer, softer, and a little bit magical.

We found a lovely spot to set up a little picnic and took some sweet photographs there. It was simple, relaxed, and full of those little moments that I love capturing: the kind that don't need much direction because they happen naturally.

And then, as the sun started to set, they danced together with the trees behind them. The sunlight was finding its way through the branches, creating the most beautiful golden glow. Those little rays of light made their way between the leaves, wrapping everything in that dreamy, almost cinematic feeling I’m always looking for.

Honestly, moments like that remind me why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

More than a photoshoot

One of the things I love most about the way I photograph people is that it doesn't have to feel like a photo shoot the entire time.

Yes, we're there to create beautiful photographs, but we're also walking, talking, laughing, exploring, and getting to know each other. There's no need to spend the whole time worrying about how to pose or whether you're doing everything right. We can simply enjoy the afternoon together, and I'll guide you along the way.

We end up talking about all sorts of things, sharing little pieces of our lives, and discovering what we have in common. And somehow, by the end of the session, I often feel like I've made new friends from a completely different part of the world.

I love capturing photographs that bring people back to a feeling, a place, or a moment in their lives. But I also love the connections that happen while we're making them.

Moving to Madrid has been a big new change for me, both personally and professionally. Starting over in a city full of incredibly talented photographers can feel a little intimidating sometimes. There are so many wonderful people doing beautiful work here, and knowing that someone chooses to trust you with their memories is something that means the whole world to me.

A little thank you

To this lovely couple from Boston: thank you so much for choosing me to capture such a special season of your lives.

Thank you for trusting a photographer you had never met, all the way across the world, when you had so many wonderful people to choose from. Thank you for being so kind, for laughing with me, for dancing in the sunset, and for making my very first photo session in Madrid such a beautiful memory.

I hope you know how much that meant to me.

And I really, really hope our paths cross again someday, perhaps for another afternoon stroll, this time with your beautiful little baby joining us.

Wouldn't that be something?

If you're visiting Madrid and thinking about having your maternity photos taken, or simply want to remember this chapter of your life together, I'd love to meet you. We can explore the city, find some beautiful light, and create something that feels like you.

No need to know how to pose. No need to be anything other than yourselves.

Just come as you are, and let's make some memories. ♡

With love,
Emme
